Urban Phenomenon in Fashion

Fashion has always been a response to what is going around us. Very often we see this sector to get influenced by art movements. One such contemporary art movement is Graffiti art.The influence of this particular art movement was immense in the field of fashion.

Fashion is an industry that thrives on being provocative, unexpected and at the cutting edge just like street art. Though marginalized at first, street art and graffiti has taken the world by storm over the last two decades, quickly evolving into a desirable art form. This overlapping of street art and fashion starts in 2001 when Louis Vuitton bags began popping up covered in neon yellow and pink graffiti font.While some explain the phenomenon by street art’s visual and aesthetic appeal only, others see it as one of the many forms of commercialization of what once was regarded as part of subversive culture. The bond hasn’t always been smooth sailing, however. Brands including Roberto Cavalli and the aforementioned Moschino have been hit with lawsuits claiming their street art designs were taken without permission, leaving no financial gain for the artists behind the original works. The labels that do it well do it right, collaborating with graffitists on everything from entire collections to store windows. Nowadays a lot of designers and luxury brands like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Moschino actively working with graffitist like Mr. brainwash, Lady Aiko.

Fashion relies on trends. At the moment street art is ridiculously on trend and the fashion world cannot afford to pass up the opportunity of tapping into this part of our popular culture. Whether the relationship between street art and graffiti will survive is yet to be seen.
